In this modern world, we tend to forget that the primary function of the mobile devices in our pockets is to serve as a cellphone. Their most basic feature is the facilitation of rapid communication with people in the world around us.
XDA Forum Member esword, has made it his mission to ensure that users of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform can dial others with ease. His application, known as RapDialer, does just that through the inclusion of features not normally found in the OEM dialer, including:
Extremely fast launch and search speed.

A few weeks ago, a petition was started by XDA Senior Member wideopn11 to get the bootloader of the Asus Transformer TF300T unlocked. The demands were simple—to provide the same type of utility tool that unlocked the Asus Transformer Prime. It’s only fair, right?
Well, Asus responded. Unlike Motorola, who seems to enjoy infuriating their rooted users, they said okay. XDA Forum Member maspro has posted a new thread after finding out that Asus has released version 7 of their unlocker utility. The big update? It’s now compatible with the Transformer TF300T!

Yesterday was a sad day we all knew would eventually come—the Windows Marketplace for Windows Mobile applications finally ceased to exist, as Microsoft officially killed Windows Mobile and mostly everything related to it sometime last year. The market brought the capability to do what Apple’s Appstore was doing at the time, which was to try and centralize all the available free and paid applications so that people could easily find their favorite apps in one, single place. The introduction of the marketplace didn’t come without its share of issues and scandals due to various flaws in functionality. For instance, Windows . . . READ ON »
The Samsung Galaxy Note we reviewed previously is an amazing device. A hybrid of tablet and phone, it fits into a niche that defies normal conventions. Recently though, we mentioned that the current leaked builds of ICS for the Note have been plagued with a superbrick bug.
Much to our surprise, Samsung has just released the ICS kernel source code for the Note! It is in no small part thanks to the work of community members like SamsungJohn and XDA Elite Recognized Developer Entropy512 that Samsung has responded to our pleas and has given us what we need to work . . . Thanks to its international reach, XDA TV gets to try and experiment with some very interesting, and sometimes unheard of phones and devices. The dual-core version of the Meizu MX is really only available in China and parts of Europe. Though there is talk of their next quad-core phone coming stateside. Regardless of the Meizu MX’s stateside popularity, there has been some significant development. Some of that development has been covered by XDA Portal Administrator Will Verduzco in this article.
In today’s episode of XDA TV, Will teaches us how to root the Meizu MX and install Ice Cream . . . READ ON »
With the Galaxy S III firmware leak, it was expected to see some of it ported to other devices. It began with the porting and removal of S-Voice, only to see its triumphant return. With the trouble that has brought, perhaps its time to check out a less dramatic, but still totally awesome port. Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 owners now have access to the Galaxy S III TouchWiz launcher.
XDA Forum Member Smando has brought the SGS3 TouchWiz Launcher port to the Galaxy S II. The launcher looks really nice and is pretty slick. Unfortunately, it only works . . . READ ON »
The Team Win Recovery Project has been picking up major steam for awhile now. And since its update to version 2.1 that we covered not too long ago, it’s been getting closer and closer to being one of those must have recoveries on newer devices. Unfortunately however, not every device has made the list quite yet. That doesn’t mean it can’t be.
Samsung Epic 4G Touch users have been clamoring for a TWRP 2.1 release for some time now, and XDA Recognized Developer Dees_Troy wants all the Epic Touch users know that Team Win is listening. While Team Win . . . READ ON »
Not too long ago, we highlighted the launch of FreeYourAndroid. For those who don’t remember, FYA was created by the folks at VillainROM (namely XDA Recognized Developer nprussell and Developer Admin pulser_g2) in the hopes of delivering structured information to help noobs and seasoned veterans alike.
Naturally, FYA has found great success in its mission, amassing a rather large following in the process. And how do they intend on rewarding that following? By having a meetup, of course! As its name implies, the event will be in Glasgow on May 25, 2012. It will run from 3:00 PM to . . . READ ON »
One of the most common questions here at XDA over the past several months has been, “When will my HTC device receive Ice Cream Sandwich?” Now, thanks to a tip from XDA Senior Member neoofoox we have our answer.
Although we previously mentioned the devices confirmed to get ICS from HTC’s blog back in March, it was only recently that HTC finally confirmed their timeline for this year’s releases. According to HTC:
What is the overall timeline of Android 4.0 updates?
The majority of devices will receive upgrades in June and July 2012 and we expect to finish upgrades in August. . . READ ON »
Owners of the Motorola Atrix 2 have recently faced a different problem than most Android enthusiasts are used to. Normally, when you install a custom recovery, it stays there. You can boot into it pretty much whenever you want and do whatever you want, knowing it’ll be there when you need to restore a Nandroid in the future. However, for Atrix 2 owners, that has been a bit of a challenge, as their problem is actually more of a choice. They can either have working GPS or a normal custom recovery experience. However, installing the custom recovery likes to break . . . READ ON »
Android users have a lot of options when it comes to weather. The big two, namely the Weather Channel official app and Weatherbug, usually give users what they need. Both apps even have tablet-friendly versions, albeit with mixed reviews. While these two apps are definitely the most popular in the weather app world, there is a new contender looking to make its way into the weather app market. Called Recast, the application provides all the features users enjoy from the others, along with a few fun features the others don’t have.

While the majority of XDA’s community members prefer vanilla-flavored Android, there are those who prefer their mobile OS to have a bit more of a unique touch. While there are always themes and other modifications to help color your experience, some prefer to load derivative OSes that only loosely resemble their Android core. For those, there are aftermarket operating systems such as LewaOS and JoyOS. Bearing striking resemblance to Xiaomi’s MIUI and Meizu’s FlymeOS, these variants could be just what the doctor ordered for those looking for a unique experience.
