Most of us want just a little bit of flair on our mobile devices. Generally, we accomplish this by adding a fancy wallpaper or aesthetically appealing set of icons, but there are almost countless ways to achieve this effect. One area not frequently adjusted by end users, however, is theming the ever present Android status bar.
Google added their own first party visual tweaks to the Android status bar in KitKat, where the status bar was made transparent in supported apps and white icons became mandatory. However, not many aftermarket developers and themers have ventured into making visual tweaks for Android’s status bar. Thankfully, XDA Recognized Themer mariozawa created the Potato Statusbar Gradient to allow users to customize their status bar gradient on the fly.
In order to install this mod, you’ll need to pull and decompile your SystemUI.apk and extract the smali files. Once extracted, open res/layout/status_bar.xml and modify a few lines. After that’s done, use the provided app to select what colors you’d like in your status bar. Currently in version 2, this mod allows you to choose between 16 different gradient options, with up to four colors per status bar.
If you’d like to spice up your Android Status Bar, head over to the original thread and give the Potato mod a shot._________
