Android and Ubuntu Now Booting on HTC HD2

Android and Ubuntu Now Booting on HTC HD2

Just three days ago, a big hurdle in the way of porting Android onto the HD2 was finally overcome. In short, the bootloader called HaRET has been patched in order to avoid CPU crashes when booting Linux through it.

And we rightly labeled that as a major breakthrough because now, the devs working on this project have apparently managed to successfully run Ubuntu, a Linux distribution often used on desktop computers, on the HD2. You might point out that this isn’t such a good operating system for a smartphone – you can’t even make calls – but don’t forget Android is also Linux-based, so…

Android is working. It was a very simple problem with a missing configuration setting in the kernel which is fixed now.

Yes, you read that right. Finally, what many HD2 users have been longing for is about to come true, thanks to some great developers from our forums – including, but not limited to XDA members cr2, Netripper, dcordes, Markinus, LeTama, dan1j3l, Cotulla, and tsamolotoff, among many others who have contributed to this project. Keep in mind though that there’s no Android or Ubuntu build available to download and try for yourself yet, because there’s still a lot of work that has to be done before Android will be actually usable on our HD2s.

In the meantime, follow the progress in the forum thread or on Twitter (htc_linux) and, again, be sure to report to us any progress by using the “Suggest Content” form.
