Android Market to Receive Update Soon, Completely Redesigned. First Glimpse of Honeycomb? (Update)

It seems Google will be pushing out a new update of the Android Market. XDA moderator pulser_g2 tipped us about the article in the Android Developers Blog. Before we are going to talk about the redesign, it might be good to list the other features first – thanks to pulser_g2 for his article @ the villainROM forums.
- New categories for Widgets and Live Wallpapers
- Filter for different screen resolutions
- Apps maximum size increased to 50MB (first 25MB)
- Refund must occur 15 minutes after installment instead of 24 hours
- A “related apps” feature
The most outstanding feature is the redesign of the market. It’s actually pretty weird that the developers have started with this new look, because Android (whether is 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3) looks very different from this. Normally, OS designers make sure that everything has the same design to create one consistent look. With this upcoming Market update, it seems the designers forgot to think about that.
There could be something more at the bottom of it though. Remember the rumors about Gingerbread to be a completely refreshed, redesigned UI? After the various leaks and ultimately the release, many people were disappointed about the fact that it wasn’t redesigned at all. We think this redesign will be part of the in 2011 scheduled Honeycomb version.
You might wonder, why are you saying this? Well, it could be possible that the Android Market update is a first glimpse of what to expect from the Honeycomb update. There have been speculations about the green color to be widely used in the OS, and this update could certainly confirm this. On a personal note, we think it looks pretty good and if designed correctly, it will certainly give the OS the much-needed refreshing look.
The official Android Market update should come available within two weeks. Continue to Android developers to view the original announcement.
Update: Market has been released, you can download it from your phone or check out the thread for the APK.
