Some of you may remember our previous article, where we talked about XDA Forum Member Legomaniac‘s Android powered, remote controlled car. As if that weren’t cool enough, the project has not only continued but received some quite significant upgrades.
The last time we saw the project, Legomaniac’s next intended step was to work on streaming video between the Android device used as a remote control and the device mounted on the rover itself. This is still being worked on, however the developer is now considering the use of a 7″ tablet device mounted on the vehicle with a controllable pan/tilt bracket.
The main differences between this latest version and the one we looked at previously, though, are in the hardware of the vehicle itself. It uses a completely new motor driver board mounted on a new chassis with mecanum wheels. The main benefit of these is that they allow the vehicle to turn on the spot and drive sideways for greatly improved maneuverability.

You can also find the source code for the Android related parts of the project on his Github for anyone who might want to try something similar. While this may seem like a cool novelty project right now, give it a few years and I reckon this is exactly the sort of thing that lazy drunkards such as myself will be sending to the fridge to grab a beer. It’s got to be easier than trying to train the dog to do it anyway.
