[APK] Chrome Remote Desktop 36 Brings Immersive Mode, Google Translate Now Supports Phonetic Input for Indian Languages, and Hangouts Offers SMS Blocking

Update: Looks like Google Translate 3.0.7 is now starting to roll out. It seems to be only a minor bugfix release compared to 3.0.6 from yesterday. We’ve gone again and mirrored it on our DevHost account. Thanks again to MihirGosai for the APK!

Android 4.4.3 is undoubtedly the main thing on any Android fan’s mind ever since its initial release just two days ago. Since then, we’ve seen a flurry of 4.4.3-related news such as OTA updates for various Nexus and GPe devices, as well as a full developer changelog.

Luckily, none of the 4.4.3-related shenanigans change the fact that today is still Wednesday, and you know what that (often, but not always) means! In this installment of Google Update Wednesday, we have significant updates for three first party Google applications. These are Chrome Remote Desktop, Google Translate, and Google Hangouts.

First up, we have Chrome Remote Desktop. For those who don’t remember, this app was first introduced back in the middle of April. Ever since then, we haven’t seen any updates for the app, but that’s OK, as it’s worked pretty well thus far. Today, however, the app has been updated to 36.0.1985.39 (up from 35.0.1916.37), and it brings a substantial new trick. Version 36 offers a new immersive full screen mode on devices running Android 4.4.x KitKat. And once you’re in immersive mode, you are given a new button that takes you back out of immersive mode. Obviously, the traditional swipe from the top of the screen gesture still works as well.

Next up, we have Google Translate 3.0.6. Not much has changed in 3.0.6 compared to the previous 3.0.5 build for users in most regions. However, users translating from Hindi and other Indian languages will be pleased to find that 3.0.6 now offers phonetic input for these languages.

Finally, we have Google Hangouts. The last time we saw an update to Hangouts was when it was updated to version 2.1.100 nearly one month ago. Now, it’s made the jump to 2.1.223, and in doing so, it’s gained the ability to block SMS messages from specific senders. This is particularly useful if you change phone numbers and get plenty of unwanted messages. In addition, you’re also able now able to set individual notification sounds on a per-hangout basis, whereas before users could only block participants and mute notifications.

All of these app updates will make their way out to consumer devices through the Play Store via a staged rollout. Naturally, not every device will be in initial wave. However, we’ve gone ahead and mirrored the APKs over on our DevHost account for your sideloading pleasure:

[Many thanks to XDA Portal Supporter MihirGosai for the Translate APK and info!]
