Just a few hours ago, we talked about how Google issued a major update to its Google Camera app. This update, which brought the app up to version 2.2, added two new panorama modes, 16:9 capture, and self-timer support. While this app update itself offered a great increase in functionality, it fell a bit short from what we’ve come to expect from Google Update Wednesdays. But although it is already Thursday in most parts of the world (including XDA HQ here on the US Eastern Seaboard), it’s still Wednesday evening over in Google land, and as such, we’ve got more Update Wednesday app updates to share.
First up, we have Google Goggles. Today’s update brings Google’s image recognition app up to version 1.9.4, and it offers a few new tricks. For starters, the UI has been cleaned up a bit, bringing it more inline with the Google Camera UI when accessing settings and different capture modes. In addition, users now have the option to upload images directly from a gallery or photo editor app, which can certainly come in handy in various situations.
Next, we have updates for Chrome Browser and Chrome Browser Beta. The former’s update brings it to version 35.0.1916.138, while the latter’s comes in at 36.0.1985.36. The update for Chrome stable seems to offer no visible changes, though the Play Store listing says that it packs performance improvements and bugfixes. However, the update for Chrome Beta offers quite a bit more. According to the official Chrome Releases blog, it brings improved text rendering on non-mobile optimized sites, the return of doodles on the new tab page, better search suggestions, and various bug fixes and performance improvements.
Now, let’s look at Docs and Sheets. The updates to both of these apps come in at version 220.127.116.11, up from 18.104.22.168 and 22.214.171.124, respectively. As alluded to by their minor version number increases, these two app updates are most likely simply bugfix releases. We’ve noticed no visible changes, but would love to hear from you if you spot anything different.
Finally, let’s take a look at Google Play Books and and Android Device Manager. Today’s updates bring these apps to versions 3.1.49 and 1.2.12, respectively. Just like the Docs and Sheets updates, there doesn’t appear to be much different in Play Books. As such, it’s highly likely that this update only brings bugfixes. But as pointed out by XDA Senior Member y2whisper in the comments section, Device Manager has gained guest mode login, which allows you to sign into other devices from your own device.
All of these app updates will make their way out to consumer devices through the Play Store via a staged rollout. Naturally, not every device will be in initial wave. However, we’ve gone ahead and mirrored the APKs over on our DevHost account for your sideloading pleasure:
