How many times have you been using your Gingerbread powered device and texting away only to accidentally touch the default smiley key? many people believ that this key is a big annoyance and have changed keyboards solely because of it. if you are among these people and woild like to come back to a stock without smiles, then you should definitely check out this little mod made by XDA member notverycreative. The dev has successfully recompiled the keyboard without this annoying little key in it. Everything else is exactly the same from layout to options and numbers. The dev also does understand that people may want to bring this back at some point or another without having to flash a new keyboard, so he mention in his post hat he would look into the possibility of adding the ability to toggle this on and off.
Please leave some feedback for the dev in case you run into any side effects. And remember, this is only for Gingerbread, so don’t try to add this to Honeycomb, which unfortunately suffers from the same fate.
That damn smiley key was driving me insane, so I got the Gingerbread keyboard source from AOSP, got it to compile, and got rid of the smiley face button.
You can find more information in the keyboard thread.
