Earlier today, we were informed that someone at Sony’s management was dropped on his/her head and started reasoning properly about the future of their devices. Well, maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration but the fact still remains the same. For those of you unaware of what went on earlier today, Sony Ericsson announced that they would unlock the bootloader for their upcoming devices (Play, Arc, Neo, and Pro). This news has sent a shock wave of happiness across the internet as devs started thinking that maybe Sony was finally going to drop their long lasting, tough stance against developers and hackers everywhere. However, everything has a caveat. As it turns out, the aforementioned devices will be bootloader unlocked, but not all of them. Whether they are unlocked or not will depend on quite a few factors including the market where the device will be sold, providers servicing that region, and much more. A very specific example is the fact that if the devices are SIM locked (meaning locked to a single GSM provider), the bootloader will remain locked. Now, if this last one is true…. that leaves only a handful of countries that will receive these goodies. For instance, while it is not impossible, it becomes complicated to buy a SIM unlocked (normally unbranded) device in the US, and when it is available, it costs an arm and a leg.
Other requirements include (but are not limited to):
Aside from the sarcastic tone, the point that we are trying to get across is the fact that Sony will have to realize eventually that moves like this are not beneficial either for them or for the development communities across the globe. If people get tired of Sony’s products because of limited access to their investments, they will look for greener pastures. And trust us, there are plenty of fish in the water.
What do you think that Sony’s next move should focus on? Do you think this was a small step in the right direction or a huge step in the fail directions? Please leave us your comments below.
By the way, for those of you that are eligible to get the “developer’s edition” device… happy modding!
