Most Android owners know (or at least have heard of) ClockworkMod, which is basically a recovery system to play with system partitions on the OS. CWM allows you to make NANDROID backups, wipe different parts of the system (cache, Dalvik, etc), and even allow you to flash update.zip from your SD card. Based on yesterday’s success in rooting almost all of HTC’s newest handsets, XDA member stridger decided to try and make this recovery alternative work on his Desire Z. According to the dev, the process is a bit “hacky” right now and recommends to wait unless you are absolutely desperate to play with the system.
The thread contains very detailed step by step instructions and downloads, so if you are knowledgeable enough and feel like playing with this a bit, give it a go.
I have just managed to get clockwork recovery work on the Desire Z. It’s a bit hacky at the moment, and will probably get much easier in the due course. I am not going to post every little step that you can find out by googling, and please be aware that I am not responsible for any bricks etc. This is playing around with the phone internals, so be careful.
The reason it is this hacky is that we do not have an engineering bootloader for the Desire Z yet.
You can find more information in the mod thread.
