CM9 Alpha Available for Samsung Galaxy W

Another day, another device gets it’s first version of CM9. This particular device however is one of those that probably falls into the category that most people assumed they would never see running Ice Cream Sandwich. The Samsung Galaxy W, with it’s 3.7” inch screen and 512Mb or RAM is not exactly what you would call a top of the range device. Nevertheless, it has done itself proud and now sports an alpha version of CM9.

The hard work was done by XDA Recognized Developer arco68, who after “3 months, 2 hard bricks, a few soft bricks and a lot of coffee” has managed to release a quite functional alpha build for this little Samsung device. Most of the major functions are working, including WiFi, phone, GPS, audio, Bluetooth, and so on. However the camera, USB tethering, FM radio, and Bluetooth audio in calls are currently not working—which to be honest, isn’t too bad at all. I’ve certainly seen less functional first builds on devices with much better specs than the Galaxy W.

This alpha version comes in the form of a flashable update.zip, and installation is pretty standard. However, it is important to use the particular version or CWM linked to in the thread, otherwise you risk a brick. If you own a Galaxy W and want to test this out for yourself, check out the development thread.
