More often than not, we have a certain type of apps that hold a special place in our hearts. For some, office applications tend to be the sources of our, affection while for others it is all about games. In my particular case, there are very few apps that deserve as much recognition as emulators. These wonders of reverse engineering are a beautiful addition to the repertoire of any one who suffers from bad cases of nostalgia-induced eBay “antique” searching. The amount of work required, in terms of coding and understanding, for a computer to emulate an entirely different device is not something to be taken lightly, but XDA Recognized Developer elban seems to not be afraid of said challenge.
This particular emulator will enable your Android device to use programs written for the ancient Commodore VIC-20, which is one of the first personal computers ever made for mass consumption. This gem of a machine was released to the public in 1980 by Commodore Business Machines and had a whopping 5 KB of RAM (compare that to the current on-going trend of handheld devices boasting 2 GB of RAM). However, it was phased out by its improved sibling, the Commodore 64 only a couple of years later. Most of the work on this port went into the original one by the Android SDL team, who created the C64 emulator. Elban took the work already done and expanded it for it to be compatible with the older system. This emulator will allow you to run any application (or ROM, as they are known in the world of emulation) in either .prg or .d64 format.
The emulator is currently in early alpha stages, so you will run into bugs when you use it. Please take it for a spin and provide log cats for the dev to look at if you run into issues such as force closes and other annoyances.
I managed to compile the Vice vic-20 emulator for android. It’s based on the work by android sdl team and Sergii Pylypenko who made the android port for the c64 version, so credit goes to them, not to me
