Developer Interview: Punk.Kaos
Posted September 19, 2010 at 12:00 pm by Captainkrtek
For those who do not know XDA member Punk.Kaos, he has been an active chef in the Droid Eris community for about a year. He has been an active XDAMember/Developer for two years now as has cooked up all sorts of goodies for us. Some of his most recent accomplishments have been KaosFroyo (Android 2.2 for the Eris). Along with KaosFroyo, he is also engineering a Multi-boot recovery for Android that allows booting Roms from the SD card. To learn about his work we asked him for an interview, which he has agreed too.
CK: First of all, thank you Kaos for taking the time out of your day and letting me interview you, we know that you’re a very busy person. To start off, when did you first start developing and which device(s) was it for?
Kaos: I first started playing with windows mobile devices back with the HTC Wizard, trying to fix the many shortcomings that I felt the devices had in what I wanted it to do for me. But I didn’t make anything I thought was release worthy at that point.
CK: As an Eris owner/user myself and many others are very grateful for your work on the Eris. What was the most challenging part about getting that on our devices?
Kaos: Obviously the initial build, there was no Froyo for the Eris at that time, and the only leaks were on ARMv7 phones. After we got it somewhat running, getting the various hardware working was the next step. I had been developing it for about 5 months, and I spend quite a few hours a week tinkering with it and related projects.
CK: It seems that KaosFroyo is practically done, how much longer do you plan to release updates for it and do you have any other Roms or development projects in mind for the Droid Eris?
Kaos: I’ll develop on it as long as I think I can add more features and fix more bugs. Obviously, Cyanogen’s team is a huge help with this, they add more features than I could think of myself. I’m also working on getting an Android 2.2 based sense Rom working on the Eris, but its a massive project without an ARMv6 sense leak. I’m making progress, but it will likely not be released until the Wildfire or Legend Froyo Roms leak. I’m also working on a multiboot boot-loader for the Eris(And other phones) which I’ve already released a rough beta of.
CK: Have you enjoyed collaborating with other Developers and do you have any projects for other devices besides the Eris planned for the future?
Kaos: Yes, in the past I worked with the team that eventually rooted the Cliq and I released the first recovery mod for it. More recently, Vinylfreak89 has helped on KaosFroyo as well as the numerous developers on AndIRC(Jamezelle, TheFuzz4, Zifnab, Zanfur, and Jcase among others) I’ve also tossed ideas around with Conap and Deced3nce a bit. And from time to time with the awesome developer team for the CDMA Hero. Its one of the best things about the Android community, for the most part we share things without ego and all concentrate on getting the most out of our devices. I do plan on working on other phones in the future. I now have a company sponsoring some of my work and I’ll be contributing to the developer communities of the other phones in the future. I don’t want to work on phones with a huge developer base already. The N1 for example has a ton of awesome developers. I want to develop on the phones that are either fringe phones or too new to have established teams.
CK: On behalf of XDA I would like to thank you for answering these questions and taking the time out of your day for this interview.
Kaos: My Pleasure
