Do You Use Facebook? Is Your Profile SSL Encrypted? If Not, Read On

We will deviate a bit from our usual app reporting as we will not be promoting this particular app for reasons that will be obvious the moment you read its description, nor will we link to the member who created it. Our roots, the roots of xda-developers lie within the foundations of a hacking community and as such, we deem certain proofs of concept neat enough to “allow them to exist” in this day and age in our beloved site. This particular member created an app that was removed from the market due to its questionable purpose and ethics behind it. The app is essentially able to sniff and intercept packets sent over Wifi, and in essence allows you to hijack Facebook accounts that are not using SSL encryption. At this point in the article a few things are probably apparent:
- Why we are not linking to the app, naming it, or even saying who made it.
- A question pops in your head as to why in the world is the Portal featuring something like this.
The answer to the later point is very simple. The app was made by the XDA member as a proof of concept, so featuring it (and you know who you are) would just get the word out there that there are incredible things that could be accomplished with our beloved Android phones. You just need to put your minds to it as possibilities are literally endless. The second reason why we put this out there is to raise awareness that security features in certain networking sites and many other applications are out there not just to annoy you but to protect you. In the case of FB, SSL encryption is an option that can be turned on. You can find instructions in here (thanks Luggruff for the link). In the face of this, we recommend that you turn it on.
