Driving Miss Droidsy–Behold The Android Powered Car

DroidMobile

One of the great things about Android is that its open source nature really allows people to “think outside the box.” No longer is it simply an OS for use in phones and tablets, you can find it in cameras, watches and even a keg. XDA Forum Member Legomaniac┬ádecided to push the envelope just that little bit further and create an Android powered remote control car as part of an independent study project.

In the developers own words;

“I have recently had a good deal of success with my prototype, and I have decided that it is mature enough that I can share it with this community. I am looking forward to gaining input from more experienced developers. It has always been a goal of mine to either start my own open source project or a fork of another, and I believe this is the perfect opportunity to do so.”

Having recently achieved control of the motor and steering via two virtual joystick, the next step is to enable video streaming between the vehicle itself and the control device as you can see in the video below.

This is an awesome project, which just goes to show how versatile Android can be. As mentioned, it’s open source so be sure to check out the forum thread and Legomaniac’s blog (which also features some other really cool stuff) if you’d like to find out exactly how it all works.
