DroidWall had been around for many years. In fact, once upon a time, we at XDA recommended it as an essential root app. Unfortunately, the project has since ended, and DroidWall has fallen somewhat into obscurity. Now, it may be making a comeback. Not as the original application, but as a fork of it called AFWall+ that promises the same features. It’s very similar to the discontinuation and subsequent rebirth of APK Tool.
XDA Senior Member ukanth has taken the responsibility of bringing DroidWall’s functionality back to current Android under the name AFWall+. Along with the old functionality that made DroidWall great, a few new features have been added. As ukanth explains:
AFWall+ is a fork of droidwall with the improved UI and additional features. Since the original author of Droidwall discontinued the project, I decided to keep the app instead of Avast Firewall. This is the initial version that I started working on since last 3 days. I’ll continue to add more features.
This will be free/opensource application. (I am setting up github, please allow me to commit the code changes)
So not only is one of the better firewall applications for Android making a comeback, but it is also going to be open source. Developers can help with the development process and make this a community-built firewall. There is a development build out now for users to try out, but expect more stable releases in the future.
