I would like to share with you all my personal experiences during the Big Android BBQ 2011 last weekend in Austin, TX, USA.
Arriving at the hotel for the first event of the weekend was exciting. I planned my trip long beforehand because I was so excited, as it would be my first time to this sort of thing outside Mexico. I wanted to meet the HTC guys, because I am a true follower of the brand since 2004, loving their superior designs. And, of course, I wanted to meet the XDA crew. Being part of the team since 2007, it was important for me to meet my friends and colleagues face to face.
The first event was the pool party, a place to start breaking the ice, recognizing those XDA´ers who I’ve talked to, banned, joked, etc. for almost 5 years. Initially, it was weird, but rapidly turned into a great, fun night. I had the chance to meet in person to so many great people, starting with XDA Senior Moderator M_T_M and Wife, who was my guide and support during all my trip.
Saturday morning started with some delay in the schedule. It was a hot Autumn day, and a crowd of young, interested people arrived at the venue. Steve Kondik (Cyanogen) and his team gave a round-up talk, and XDA’s own AdamOutler and connexion2005 showed their high-level hardware mod called UnBrickable Mod, explained JTAG, and gave fascinating presentations on open source development boards.
I had the pleasure to meet SassiBoB and azrienoch from XDA TV, also met Ashley Esqueda from Android Central–all great, interesting, fun people!. As the end of the day approached and a few people still arriving, I enjoyed many activities happening simultaneously. That’s when I met the Sphero and Metawatch people, who showed us a remote control ball directed by your Android device and a watch that displays all your device notifications via bluetooth, respectively.
On Sunday, the great BBQ was served, some giveaways won, I visited the HTC, Samsung, and Motorola booths. The great stericson and nice lady, TheRomMistress, were at the XDA booth, inviting everyone in the community to sign the XDA-Developers banner. There was also the infamous “Ban Me” list where you could volunteer for an honorary self-ban for 24 hours or write down people you wanted to be banned.
It all ended very well, made some new friends and learned a lot. The day came to the end, but the more adventurous celebrated at the hotel all night with a nice, informal group chat by the pool. Then it was time to say good bye to everyone, and start planning for the next Big Android BBQ in 2012!.
I want to give an especial recognition and thanks to the organizers. They poured their love, sweat, and tears into making this a fantastic event.
If you were there please share your experiences with those members couldn´t make it. Now, finally home again and bit nostalgic for all the friends and fun I made there… See ya next year!
