Explaining and Advancing the UnBrickable Mod

Explaining and Advancing the UnBrickable Mod

The UnBrickable Mod team are still at it, bringing our devices to a level of submission that would impress even the kinkiest dominatrix.  XDA Recognized Developer AdamOutler posted a guide to reverse engineering hardware, and a new UnBrickable Resurrector.  Also, the UnBrickable Mod is now available to the 7” Galaxy Tab P1000.  If that isn’t enough development awesomeness for you, AdamOutler also released Heimdall One-Click Back to Stock for the Galaxy Tab.

The new UnBrickable Resurrector allows you to monitor your device’s status real-time, or if it’s bricked, it will tell you if it’s possible to resurrect it.  There are four known types of bricks, according to the developer, and the UnBrickable Ressurector will tell you which you have on your hands.  Simply plug your device into a Linux computer, and run the program.

Hard Brick-The device is unresponsive and will not enumerate USB, a hardware based solution is the only method which will recover this type of brick

Soft Brick -The device shows something on the screen or possibly nothing at all, firmware download is possible because this is a “Download Mode”.

UnBrickable-The device has been modified to accept a debug-mode flash which cannot be altered.

Lucky Brick- The device ends up in UnBrickable debug mode and the Ultimate UnBrickable Resurrector can be used without a hardware modification to resurrect the device.

The guide that AdamOutler posted walks us through the process of discovering which xOM resister pins to remove or leave, using the least destructive methods first.  These are the same methods he uses to bring the UnBrickable Mod to a new device.

From AdamOutler
The methods I’m using here can be used on nearly ANY device for nearly ANY purpose, not just locating boot modes. Using the techniques I’m laying out here, you can locate any physical memory register on any chip.
