Get Back the AOSP Browser without Root

Get Back the AOSP Browser without Root

If you happen to own any Nexus device starting with the Galaxy Nexus, you’ve surely noticed the disappearance of the trusty old AOSP browser. While many people are happy with Chrome for Android, others are not content with the replacement browser’s relatively poor scrolling performance and lack of Flash support. That’s generally no big deal, as getting the AOSP browser back is just an update.zip flash away in any custom recovery.

What do you do if you aren’t rooted? Previously, this meant accepting defeat and installing another replacement browser with Flash support instead. Thanks to XDA Forum Member blackhand1001, however, it is now possible to get back the AOSP Browser without Root access. What’s more, he also brings back the bookmark sync feature in order to allow you to share bookmarks with the instance of Chrome on your desktop.

Getting started is incredibly easy. First, navigate to /system/app and install browserproviderproxy.apk and reboot. Don’t worry, it won’t look like that part worked, but it worked. And no, you don’t need root access to simply view and execute from /system/app. All you need is a file manager capable of read-only access to that directory, such as EStrongs and many others. Then after the reboot, install the browser and (optionally) the bookmark sync app. Once this is done, you’ll be able to browse all of your Flash-enabled sites with ease.

Head over to the original thread to get started. And if you’re doing this in order to get Flash on your mobile device, don’t forget to visit the Adobe Flash Player archives and download the latest version.
