GMD HideBar Makes the Status Bar Go Away

The status bar is one of Android’s oldest friends. It’s been there since day one and it’s there to this day, giving users all sorts of information and notifications. However in certain circumstances, users would temporarily prefer to remove it. Now, there’s a simple application by XDA Senior Member StupidIdea called GMD HideBar that will toggle the status bar on and off.

The root-enabled application is easy to use. Users simply install the app and toggle whether the status bar is present. What the application actually does is kill the status bar process. There are a few issues with the application. Currently the known issues are that static wallpapers in ICS ROMs may disappear or reset to default once the status bar is killed. According to StupidIdea:

This is because static wallpaper run on same process as status bar and killing status bar kills wallpaper. Sometimes wallpaper gets mad after restart. It thinks that it crashed and maybe image is to blame so it resets to default.
Workaround: use Live wallpaper. You can try ‘Simple image wallpaper’ from market if you want static image.

The other known issue is kind of obvious: You won’t receive any notifications. Given that the notifications are part of the status bar process, users will have to turn their status bar back on to see what they’ve been missing.
