While the ASUS Transformer Prime has was provided with an app to officially unlock its bootloader, the original Transformer hasn’t been so lucky. The bootloaders for Transformers with serial numbers beginning with B60 and below were cracked by XDA Members rayman and apache14 (known in open source circles as RaYmAn and Bumble-Bee respectively) last year.
However, ASUS changed their encryption with models B70+, leaving those users without a permanent root or unbricking solution. Nvflash has always been the desired tool for this, allowing the user to enter a special mode called APX and flash partition images, thus bypassing the bootlader. However a compatible Nvflash hasn’t been available for the newer models of the Transformer. That changes today.
The AndroidRoot team (comprised of rayman, apache14, ieftm, kmdm and lilstevie) has once again come through for the community. After reverse-engineering Nvflash and reimplementing parts of it, they have released “Wheelie”, a pre-loader to Nvflash.
Wheelie is an nvflash pre-loader that boots the tablet into an nvflash ready mode that lets you use regular nvflash commands (with -r prepended!). In the long run it will be an open-source nvflash reimplementation similar to heimdall for samsung devices.
The tool also includes instructions for just flashing recovery, enabling you to then flash a custom ROM to the device and obtain permanent root, without having to worry about waiting for a root exploit. And to top it all off, it makes any B70+ device unbrickable.
