Device tear downs can be the difference between a user fixing their device and simply selling it at way beneath its value for spare parts. Additionally, some tear downs have even helped fix long standing problems with other devices. However, at the end of the day, sometimes it’s just fun to take something apart and see what makes it tick. For users of the Acer Iconia A100, not only do you now have a guide for fixing a broken microphone module, but also a pretty thorough guide to tearing the device itself down.
XDA Forum Member Metallica 4 Life has taken some time to tear down the Iconia A100 when a microphone module broke and needed replacement. With all the screen shots and proper tools listed, the user not only created a guide to replacing the microphone, but an entire tear down guide for the Iconia A100 that could help plenty of users fix other problems.
The tear down, obviously, requires some tools. While we’re sure most users would end up figuring it out with a much cruder set of tools, the recommended tools are the following:
1) Set of small philips screwdrivers
2) Soldering iron
3) Solder (optional, not necessary as the mics have solder on them already)
4) Something to pry the plastic open with (I used my nail but you can use a flathead screwdriver…etc)
And, of course, a replacement microphone if you’re using the guide for its intended purpose. From there, Metallica 4 Life lays a step by step process out for taking each piece of the Iconia A100 until you are staring straight at its underoos. For those needing to replace their mic module, there’s screen shots on how to do that. For those needing to tear apart their A100 for other reasons, there isn’t a step by step guide for that, but at least you have the device opened up properly so you can figure it out. It does not, however, tell you how to take out the battery. As always, users should know that tearing the device down will void your warranty (if it isn’t already voided) and can cause serious and irreparable harm if done incorrectly.
