It looks like the time has finally come for HTC device owners. After lots of promises, blood, sweat, and tears, we are finally seeing one of the largest handset manufacturers come out with the much anticipated ICS update for their 2011 line up of devices. The first reports started coming in this morning where a member got a notification update of an impending OTA, which was about 297 MB in size. XDA Forum Member FnH84 went a step further and caught this update.zip as well and uploaded it to a public domain for whoever wants to start tinkering with it.
Why is this a good thing you ask? Well, having an official build normally means that there is an official kernel associated with it, which will make sure that all features on your device are properly working. This means, working cameras, GPS, hardware acceleration, and much more. On top of that, this build comes loaded with Sense 3.6, albeit a lot of people were expecting Sense 4 to be loaded on it. Unfortunately, this is a story that we have seen far too many times where HTC will likely claim that no device older than the One series will be able to support Sense 4, much like they have done with every version of Sense in the past.
One thing worth mentioning is that there have been rumors that the update is so far being rolled out in the Nordic countries in Europe and possibly Germany. So, considering the time delay between updates world wide that HTC has presented in the past, we should see a world wide distribution of this within the next 1 to 2 weeks. The uploaded update.zip should serve as a new, more stable base to work out the kinks of the already existing ports for other devices like the EVO 3D.
All in all, happy devving everyone!
This release seems to be only available in Nordic countries (and possibly Germany?) at the moment.
