HTC Source Movement Petition for Timely Kernel Source Releases

HTC Source Movement Petition for Timely Kernel Source Releases

Much of the independent Android development that takes place here at XDA depends on the availability of kernel source code for specific devices. HTC is known for releasing source code three to four months after release of device. In fact they have a policy of 90-120 days that they cite when responding to queries, as can be seen in the linked thread below. Naturally, this decreases the pace of development during that time. For this reason, XDA Senior Member PhxkinMassacre has created a petition started to ask the manufacturer to release kernel source code in a more timely manner.

For the unaware, Android is based on the Linux kernel, which is licensed under the GPL v2 license. This means that any party modifying it must release source code when releasing modified binaries. While many manufacturers were initially slow with their releases, most have changed to a more timely source release pattern—often within hours of or even before pushing out OTA updates. This helps the developer and enthusiast communities, and also fulfills their legal requirements.

If you want to sign the petition, head over to the petition page at change.org and add your signature. To join the discussion, add your views, provide feedback, or look up the contact info of HTC key figures to contact directly courtesy XDA Forum Mod sgt.slaughter, visit the petition’s forum thread.

This isn’t the first petition against HTC by the developer and user community. Recently, a petition was started by the HTC Desire HD users when HTC went back on their word of releasing ICS for the device. If HTC refuses to change its ways, this might not be the last petition either.
