Jelly Bean Hits the OG Transformer (TF101)… and Again…. and Again

As of late, we have seen how Jelly Bean has spilled throughout XDA onto virtually every device that has any kind of development going for it. Since the source was released by Google, AOSP builds have been running rampart throughout the site, including the likes of CM10 and a few other “directly from source” type of projects. Tablets have also been getting quite a few ports as of late, and one of the expected ones to get something going soon was the original Asus Transformer (TF101). Thanks to the sudden influx in development that has kept this tablet in its glory, it receoved not one, or two, but three ports, back to back.

XDA Forum Member rayman33 was the first one to release a port of the new Android sweet treat. His AOSP rom is a fully functional build which features mostly everything you could ask for on your tab (camera, GPS, Wifi, youtube in 720p, and much more). Rayman33′s ROM actually uses a self made kernel that allows users to overclock their devices to 1.6 GHz, and packs a few other goodies sprinkled throughout. In the meantime, XDA Recognized Developer rayman was preparing a CM10 rom of his own, which included almost all the same functionality (minus the kernel, of course). Word of advise, flashing rayman33′s kernel on a CM10 build will likely render your wifi useless due to a different driver being used by rayman. And last but not least, XDA Recognized Developers teameos finally released their infamous EOS*3 AOSP rom. They have also released one for the Xoom  not too long ago, so having one for the Transformer was simply a logical step.

All builds live up to the name Project Butter thanks to their smooth UI performance. However,  one thing that lacks on all builds is full dock support. Mouse, keyboard, and SD card are detected by the system. However the second battery does not. Furthermore, all the builds seem to have “sleep issues,” as the tab’s battery will drain overnight, even under no activity. And last but not least, the magnetic sensor that allows your tab to know when it is opened or closed (when docked) does not seem to be working either. You have got to keep in mind that they are in alpha state, so bugs are to be expected. Still, kudos to all the devs for these fantastic builds.

On another front, it seems that Asus Germany has officially announced that the TF101 and the Slider will get the JB upgrade after all. It was originally announced by Asus that the JB upgrade would go as far back as the Prime (TF201), but now it seems that the TF101 was allowed to receive the upgrade after all. This means that, hopefully sooner than later, those who prefer the stock Asus look, will have something else to look forward to when looking for roms to flash.

Please try out these builds, and make sure that you report back to the devs in their preferred ways (via logcat, on their issue trackers, etc). Happy flashing!
