While metal detection may not be every Android lover’s favorite past time, it is possible for most users with the built-in hardware on nearly all Android devices. With newer versions of Android coming out, most applications have taken the time to adapt. However, many magnetometer apps haven’t really gotten a big update in a while, and many don’t even work on newer versions of Android including ICS, Honeycomb, and Gingerbread.
This is a problem that XDA Forum Member icechen1 is looking to fix with a new application for Android devices 2.3 and up. In the words of the developer:
But there are already a ton of metal finders on Play, you might say. Most similar apps on Play right now looks like they’re made for Android 1.6 or ads-packed, so why not release my own take on it without all the gimmicks.
Icechen1 has released a completely free (and ad-free) metal detector app, complete with an overhauled UI suited for newer versions of Android. Besides the obvious features of the app, it can also:
-Displays the field strength in microtesla, milligauss or in gamma.
-Export the data to a CSV file, do anything with it
-Free and No Ads
-Option to force screen on to prevent screen from closing
-A historical chart
-Optimized for Ice Cream Sandwich/Holo theme
-Works on Gingerbread and up.
Not enough? The application also works through walls, so it’s theoretically possible to use it for things like detecting wires in the wall and other handyman work. With a number of nice features, and support for newer versions of Android, anyone from aficionados looking for loose change in the couch to specialists can find use for the app.
