This fragment of the intro of the Minimal Matte thread by XDA member shiftedx shows us the motive for him to start the theme:

I see all sorts of glossy themes and just way too over the top for my taste and I’m sure some of you guys as well.
The result: A minimal, clean theme without too much eye-candy. A concept that is known in the Windows Mobile theming world, but for general Android phones, there isn’t really such theme available yet. A reason for shiftedx to start this project was to deliver a clean theme for both Android 2.1 and 2.2, called ‘Minimal Matte’. The matte finish to all graphics, combined by the new font and refreshed colours, definitely makes the theme an eye-catcher.
After a few tests builds, there is finally a pretty stable version that should work on any Froyo (2.2) and Eclair (2.1) build. Since it’s currently in alpha stage, we expect some more updates soon. The theme can also be found in a few ROMs for the G1 — Cyanogenmod and CaNNoN202 Complete Eclair–, and will soon come with a Nexus One ROM.
Continue on to the theme thread, root is required.
