MTD-Utils Tool for Dell Streak 5 Brings Flashing to Booted Android System

The Dell Streak 5 was around before phablets were cool. While it never caught on in the mainstream, it’s had a pretty good development life here on XDA. It is not quite done yet, though. Recently, a tool was released that gives the Dell Streak 5 a few developer-level features—some of which can be used by average users.

XDA Senior Member _n0p_ recently released MTD-Utils. On the surface, the tool doesn’t bring a lot for the average user. It is a few compiled MTD utilities called nanddump, nandwrite, and nand_erase. These can be pretty fun if you know how to use them. They do essentially what their names imply. In addition to the tool, _n0p_ has also included some essential information needed to use the tool. These include the MTD partitions for the Dell Streak 5 and some instructions on the tools work.

The most interesting part of the tool is the nandwrite. As _n0p_ explains:

nandwrite should enable you to write boot, recovery, system and firstboot right from android system (i don’t think that it’s good idea, but anyway)

It may not be a good idea, but it can be handy. Using nandwrite and nand_erase, you can actually switch recoveries on the fly while your Dell Streak 5 is rooted. You need both recovery images on the root of your SD card. Then you nand_erase the recovery, nandwrite the new recovery image, and test to make sure it worked.
