About a month ago, we were all overjoyed by the liberation of the Desire family, which led to the almost immediate rooting of the new MyTouch 4G (aka Glacier). The permanent root was what a lot of people were waiting for. However, this can be equated to the device being “on parole”, meaning that it is free, but only to a certain extent. Or at least this was the case until a group of devs did a full S-OFF on the Radio. XDA member grankin01 posted a very detailed guide on how to achieve this. Here is the kicker, this can truly, irreversibly, mess up your device if you are not careful. The benefits for taking the plunge?
- SuperCID of the device, which basically allows you to flash any carrier’s rom into the device.
- Sim Unlock the device, which will allow you to use the device on different GSM carriers.
- Completely turn the radio S-OFF, which is the true (and most important) security flag present in most Android devices.
Feeling adventurous enough? Want to give it a shot? Make sure that you read everything before proceeding.
Ok guys, first of all Scotty2 gets all the credit for the program R&D. I used my device as a test bed and have tried a couple different kernels (Gr8Gorilla’s O/C Kernel and the stock kernel).
Now for the boring stuff …
This is a very invasive way of rooting your device but the benefit is TRUE S=Off and root privileges throughout the system. As such, you do this at your own risk and if you brick your device neither Scotty2 nor myself are responsible, YOU ARE!!! Do this at your own risk!!!
This is not for the faint of heart and if you have any reservations about doing things like this do not do it.
This process will do three things for your device. I will explain them here:
You can find more information in the guide thread.
