The CyanogenMod project is known for adding extensive features not available in stock Android. Recently, a new version of the Messaging app appeared in CyanogenMod 10 nightlies. The app boasts new message pop-ups and revamped notifications, and adds gesture support for quickly responding to texts using predefined templates.
Upon receiving a message, you get on-screen pop-up with the full content of the message. You can quickly reply right from the pop-up, without having to open the Messaging app itself.
The app also makes use of the new rich notification system introduced in Jelly Bean. Notifications can now be expanded with a double finger swipe. You can quickly respond to the text right from the notification itself using the ‘Call’ or ‘Quick reply’ options, without having to open the app itself. Note that for some reason, the ‘Quick reply’ option is not available if you have the QuickMessage pop-up feature enabled.
Another new feature is the the ability to respond to a message with a custom template, using on-screen gestures of your choice.
Templates and their associated gestures can be configured in the app’s settings. When responding to any text, simply draw the gesture on your phone’s screen to automatically insert its associated template into the reply.
The app packs many more features as well, including management of SIM card messages, automatically deleting old messages, emoji support, timestamp customization, and so on.
By default, the app has the same color scheme and looks used in the stock Android Messaging app. XDA Recognized Contributer lyndonguti has made an inverted version with light text on a dark background. He has also made both versions available in flashable zip formats.
To install the app on any CM10-based ROM, perform the following:
- APK Method: Download the regular or inverted APK, rename it to Mms.apk and copy it to /system/app on your device, replacing the one that’s already there. Then, change its permissions to rw-r–r–.
- Recovery Method: Download the regular or inverted zip file, flash it from recovery and then reboot your phone after wiping cache and dalvik cache.
