Next Nexus Device to be Codenamed “Flounder?”

Next Nexus Device to be Codenamed “Flounder?”

It’s grown quite commonplace to see unreleased Android-related information unintentionally appear on the Chrome Issue Tracker. Despite this, we’ve only really seen unreleased Android builds appear on the site—not unreleased hardware. Now thanks to Chromium Issue #371206, it seems like we may be getting our first passing glimpse at Google’s next Nexus device.

Obviously, Chrome Issue #371206 is of no particular consequence itself—it’s just a reproducible crash report. However, the interesting part is in the build fingerprint:

Build fingerprint: ‘google/volantis/flounder:L/AAV36B/1156106:userdebug/dev-keys’

The fine folks over at MYCE have taken a closer look at the name with current naming convention. The “V” in the build name means that it was from Q2 2014. the “36″ indicates that it’s from the 36th day of Q2 (May 6th). The “B” suffix means it’s the second build of the day. On top of this, they believe that the build is running the development branch of the Android SDK tools because of the “AA” branch prefix.

MYCE also posits that this will be the Nexus 7 successor. However, it is just as likely to be any unreleased Nexus device currently in the works.

So now that we know that Google is cooking up some “Flounder,” what do you think this device will be? Will it be the next Nexus 7? Perhaps that rumored HTC-built Nexus 8 that we’ve been hearing about? What about the next Nexus smartphone or full-size tablet? Let us know what you think and what you want out of the next Nexus in the comments below!
