Nexus Q Receives Unofficial KitKat Update and Becomes First Ball with Android 4.4

The Google Nexus Q was one of the most peculiar devices introduced by Google. This media streaming, exceptionally built sphere was presented alongside Google Nexus 7 (2012) in June 2012 and originally shipped with Ice Cream Sandwich. Google never released an update for it and never really gave it any product distribution, so XDA was the only hope to taste some sweets.

In the past few weeks, we talked about KitKat updates for many devices perhaps nobody expected an update for the least understood Nexus device. But XDA Forum Member hharte proved us wrong, as he released almost fully working build of Android 4.4 KitKat based on CyanogenMod. There are still some things that need to refined like WLAN, and audio doesn’t always work with Google Music. That said, the vast majority of features work as intended and KitKat on Nexus Q can be considered stable even though it is described as experimental.

The Nexus Q looks almost like it belongs on another planet. Too bad Google decided to stop producing it. Nevertheless, if you own one, you should consider visiting the development thread to get started.
