Rename Your Bizarrely Named APKs With Ease

If you’ve ever used a file browser to peruse the contents of your SD card, you undoubtedly noticed the mess of undecipherable APK filenames that live inside your Android device. Wouldn’t it be great if somebody could create a simple application to rename those pesky installers into something decipherable by actual humans? As always, there’s an app (on XDA) for that.

Today’s gem, created by XDA forum memberĀ primetechv2, allows you to rename any number of APKs with a simple drag-and-drop. Using AAPT to extract the friendly name and a little batch file wizardry, RenameAPK handles the rest on any Windows-based PC. In addition to renaming files stored locally on your computer, you can mount your Android device’s USB storage to organize your APKs directly. In the words of the developer:

If you have a slough of apk files with weird names like I do, this DOS tool is for you. It uses AAPT (included) to check an APK file’s name and version, and renames your APK in a more human-readable format.

Example:
pp170.apk –> PhotoShake Pro_1.7.0.apk

You can run this tool through the command line, or by dragging one (or multiple!) .apk files to it.

In my experience, this app works perfectly as intended, without any drama or user intervention. If you’re interested in giving it a shot as well, head over to the application thread and download a copy for yourself. Your SD card will thank you.
