RIM Giving Out Free PlayBook Tablets To Android Developers

RIM Giving Out Free PlayBook Tablets To Android Developers

One of the reasons the BlackBerry PlayBook never got much traction is because of its lack of third-party apps (actually, first-party apps as well; think email). Anyway, the PlayBook OS 2.0 update that’s expected to arrive this month will try to mitigate that shortcoming: it will finally include the long-awaited BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps. Basically, developers can repackage their existing Android apps and submit them to the BlackBerry App World, so they will run on the PlayBook and upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices.

In order to encourage developers to actually do this, RIM has announced that it would be giving out free PlayBook tablets to all developers who submit an Android app. Presumably, if you have an Android app, you’d just need to head over to the Android tools site, repackage your app and submit it to the BlackBerry App World.

The deadline is February 13, so if you’re in for a free PlayBook better hurry up and visit the BlackBerry Dev Blog for all the guidelines, terms and conditions.
