When it was first rooted, the HTC EVO 4G LTE had a lot going for it. If you chose to unlock using HTC Dev, kernel flashing was actually possible. While S-Off is like the holy grail of unlocking on any HTC phone, the fact that people could flash whatever they wanted really made it unnecessary for the average ROM flasher. Unfortunately, with the latest set of updates, HTC updated the HBoot and locked it down. Now, EVO LTE users don’t have the freedom to flash whatever they want.
Thankfully, there’s already a fix for that. XDA Forum Moderator and Recognized Developer xHausx has ported an old favorite from the HTC EVO 3D. Essentially, it’s a way to modify an update.zip to trick the phone into flashing the kernel anyway.
The method is relatively simple, and xHausx keeps the steps short and sweet. You place the kernel you want to flash in the update.zip, modify the updater-script accordingly, and then sign it. Once done, it’ll flash the kernel you want it to. Additionally, Xhausx has included a pretty extensive FAQ for users that lists additional requirements and helps troubleshoot common issues. This should restore everyone’s ability to flash kernels. When will HTC learn that we’ll just find a way around their shenanigans?
