Safety Issue With Stock EVO MicroUSB Cables

Safety Issue With Stock EVO MicroUSB Cables

We are stepping sideways on the news right now to bring you a rather interesting discovery made by XDA member Childofthehorn. She claims that the cables that are manufactured by HTC to connect our devices to the computers and chargers, particularly those that come with the EVO (USB to microUSB) are badly engineered. After talking to a few people, it seems that hers is not the only one to suffer the tragedy. It seems (and we will let you read all the details) that part of the connector is rather close to the metal casing of the plug itself. With a little movement, the casing can come in contact with some of the wires, causing the cable to overheat, and if you are not careful with it, you could end up frying your device.

This was only reported in the EVO section and the member claims that she has asked Sprint devs who have seen this tons of times as well. It’d be interesting if it is a manufacturing problem in general or if it only pertains to the EVO. Please leave your thoughts.

This Cable was not engineered properly because of the MicroUSB Connector Chosen. Instead of using a proper MicroUSB Cable Mount style Connector as seen in the picture below, they went with a panel mount/board mount hybrid connector (cheapest as it uses board mount parts) as seen above.
