For users having trouble with the .3gp extension of the video output of their HTC Droid Incredible, XDA member scuccia created a small mod which prevents the camera to convert the recorded video to 3gp. According to scuccia, the camera actually records in the well known mpeg-4 format, but converts it afterwards to 3gp. Since the mp4 format is supported by so many more programs, this hack could be pretty useful for users that face problems with playing the video.
Although, there are tons of converters available, you need to keep in mind that every conversion means data-loss. The quality of the videos is really going backwards that way. This hack actually saves one conversion step, because the camera software doesn’t have to convert the mp4 extension to 3gp. This could also mean a better video quality, but the biggest advantage is the fact that this video format is widely supported. XDA member quepaso, for example reports that this makes it much more easier to play videos using PS3 Media Server.
Unfortunately, this hack is currently only available for the HTC Droid Incredible. The idea might be taken over by other developers, so we hope they will start modifying it for other devices too.
Root required. Check out the hack thread to find more information and download.
