Script Set Allows Building of Native Linux Applications

The marriage of Android and Linux has always been a thing of greatness for end users. With a number of modifications on a large number of devices ranging from simple hacks to running full blown Linux, it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Now, with a script set from XDA Member smitna, users can now compile native Linux software and have it work for their android phones. Smitna explains:

With this bash script your are able to build relatively easy from source a lot of native software (over 80 at the moment) from the GNU/Linux community for your Android phone and you will have
the good experience with free software.
All these tools and programs are not “apps for the GUI” for Android but native running command line tools “under the surface” of your Android GUI like the kernel and other services.
Don’t ask me if it makes any sense to install program xy (like MySQL) on a phone. This is your decision. It’s possible, so try it and see what you can do with it.

This takes a little bit of know-how so make sure you read up on the basics before attempting, but that shouldn’t scare anyone away. You can find a full list of applications that can be built, download links and further instructions in the original thread. Smitna has also mentioned that it has only been tested on a Samsung Galaxy S II, but it should work for most devices. Feel free to check out the link above if you’d like to try it with your phone.
