Just yesterday, we talked a little about Google ATAP’s team and their latest endeavor, the Kinect-like Project Tango. Now, thanks to the fine folks over at TechCrunch, we have our first glimpse of a prototype in action.
The video comes from Matterport, a computer vision and perceptual computing solution company, which was given access to an early prototype device. In the demo, the prototype uses its depth and standard imaging cameras to create a 3D representation of an indoor environment.
While the captured image data is admittedly a bit rough, this is due to the prototype’s lower resolution color camera. It’s safe to assume that shipping devices based on Tango technology will feature far higher resolution color imaging. Furthermore, the prototype’s depth sensor was still able to capture an impressive amount of spatial detail, which can be seen in the video above.
Unfortunately, the demo doesn’t show anything other than the capture process and the final results, so we’re unable to see the amount of processing time required to create the 3D render from all of the captured data. Regardless, this is still exciting, as it demonstrates a huge potential for entirely new types of applications._________
