Silent Camera Mod Disables Shutter Sound for Android 4+ Devices

Ever found yourself in a situation where you want to take pictures, but don’t want it to make any sound? And no, we are not talking about spying on others. Rather, we are talking about scenarios such as capturing priceless moments of your kids or pets doing something interesting, where the shutter sound would distract them from their activity.

We recently featured an open-source app called Open Source Spy Cam that helps you covertly take photos from your device. However, what if you’d rather accomplish this goal from the default camera interface?  By default, Android doesn’t allow you to disable the camera shutter sound for pictures or video recordings but luckily, XDA Senior Member rmkilc has a solution for you.

Silent Camera Mod is a recovery flashable zip file that simply disables your camera’s shutter sound. It was built for the Google Nexus 4, but the recovery script it uses should work on any device running an AOSP-based Android 4 or later ROM, as long as you have a custom recovery installed to flash the zip file. It will most likely not work on devices running manufacturer-skinned versions of Android such as Samsung TouchWiz or HTC Sense. The developer has also provided another zip to revert the changes, should you need to re-enable the shutter sounds. The mod also has a script for /system/addon.d that ensures the changes persist after reboot, if necessary.

You can find both zip files in the forum thread.
