Simulate Tilt-Shift Photography with Miniature Preview Camera

Simulate Tilt-Shift Photography with Miniature Preview Camera

Over the last few years, we have seen a plethora of camera applications that allow you to add the most interesting looking effects to your pictures without much of an issue. Things like the Sony Xperia Z1′s ability to add Augmented Reality effects to the pictures, HDR, 3D pictures (on the HTC EVO 3D and LG Optimus 3D), and good ol’ Photosphere are among some of the most commonly seen effects in the Android world. (And yes, I intentionally left Instagram out of the list. Sorry, but applying a filter to make all your pictures look “old” and sepia-toned does not make you a professional photographer. :p). However as time goes by, people get bored, and they need to try new and somewhat innovative concepts that allow them to do more fun stuff with their camera. Lo and behold,  XDA Forum Member OctoberApps came up with a rather unique concept, which resulted in Miniature Preview Camera.

So, what is this app and what exactly does it do? Well, the app is designed around an optical effect known as tilt shift effect, which is an effect that uses dual movement in a camera lens (rotation and tilting). One part of the picture will be clear and sharp, while the other gets blurred out completely, thus giving the impression that the subject is actually miniature in size. Since the cameras in our devices (with the exceptions of devices like the Galaxy Camera, of course) have no movable parts other than their piezoceramic focusing systems, the effect is simulated via software. This app allows the user to see the preview of the picture about to be taken, before it is actually captured. It also gives the end user the ability to do some easy post-processing to add the desired effect.

Please beware that the app is still in early testing phase. And because of the unique hardware used for each device’s camera, making a universal app is not an easy feat. Having said that, the link is in the OP, so please install it and let the dev know if it works with your device(s). If it does not, please make sure that you leave a message with the device you are using, what OS version, and as always, a logcat if at all possible.
