Smart Taskbar Receives Major Update

Back in 2010, the XDA portal featured Smart Taskbar, an app by XDA Senior Member jerryfan2000 that may be considered one of the earlier sidebar apps for Android. It packed a fully-featured app drawer, five quick shortcuts, a task switcher, and a home button—pretty impressive considering it ran on devices running Android versions as old as 1.5.

Fast forward three years to 2013, and jerryfan2000 has developed Smart Taskbar V2, boasting a plethora of new features as well as a UI makeover. An app that can now only be described as a sidebar, launcher, quick settings, and task switcher super-hybrid, the app now features:

  • Ten ‘quick-launch’ shortcuts
  • A customizable app launcher that allows you to uninstall and move apps
  • Custom launcher tabs for categorizing and organizing apps
  • A tab for your widgets
  • Quick settings for toggling WiFi, aeroplane mode, bluetooth and screen rotation
  • Task switcher

Its also great to see that the ability to set shortcuts for custom actions has stuck around from the last version. This allows for the flexibility to activate your most frequent actions, such as GPS navigation to a predetermined place, automatically playing your favorite album, artist or playlist, and directly calling a contact. A handy guide will also greet you upon your first app launch that describes Smart Taskbar’s core functions, and the navigation of its interface.

Jerryfan2000 has done a remarkable job with this new update to Smart Taskbar. It includes plenty of novel and practical features and functions that too few sidebar apps have. It’s compatible with Android versions 2.2 and newer, and is ad-free and free from the Play store. If you would like to check this out, head over to its application thread for more information.
