Although, there are various SMS popup type applications for Android, XDA forum member mapeapps (two developers) decided to write their own app since they couldn’t find a decent lightweight solution.

SMS Notifier, is an SMS and MMS Notifier which gives you an option for privacy settings (so that the body of the message and/or sender is hidden).

Other features include:

Shows number of unread messages in notification bar.

Adjustable level of privacy.

Customisable sound, vibration and LED notifications.

Possibility to change the icon in the notification bar.

On screen preview of new incoming messages.

Notification reminder system.

Quiet hours feature.

Designed for low battery consumption.
