A few decades ago, we only dreamed about having things such as smart phones, almost full fledged computers in our pockets, tablets, video calling, and/or video conferencing and live streaming. The amount of bandwidth required was so substantial for a half decent video connection that streaming live events through the Web was only reserved for companies and places that could afford decent connections like T3 lines. In this Brave New World of ours, we have overcome most of these obstacles and are simply in the path of perfecting the technology. Nowadays, anyone with a camera and access to the Internet can post a video feed. However, Social media companies have been hard at work trying to implement these features into their services. For instance, Google+ has Hangouts, which essentially allow anyone with an account to host a live event on camera and stream it to anyone in the world.
Unfortunately, not everyone likes or even uses G+. In fact, some are more loyal to the likes of Facebook. However, since the FB mobile app does not allow streaming, it is a major inconvenience for those who do use it. Well, that is where XDA Forum Member nitro-ale comes in, with a brand new app to try and overcome this little hurdle (at least until FB gets it together and makes one of their own). Cam on NET is a service that allows you to stream live video from your mobile device through your Facebook account. The app is in very early stages and requires you to go through the dev’s FB page in order to properly use the service. The app itself will work well without doing that, but according to the dev, it will have a hard time trying to keep your credentials. As such, your feed will show as if it was coming from an anonymous individual.
Please take the app out for a spin and report back any bugs that you may find. Suggestions for new features are also welcome. Hopefully the good folk at Facebook take note and understand that people actually do want to have such features in their mobile app. So Facebook, you have some catching up to do unless you want to end up like MySpace.
This app allows you to stream a live event from your phone to your facebook account.
