The Android on Bada Project Takes a Huge Step Forward

The Android on Bada Project Takes a Huge Step Forward

Shoehorning an operating system onto a device that it was never intended for is an incredibly difficult, time consuming, and often frustrating process. However these types of projects are exactly what XDA-Developers is all about, and the people behind them are the very reason this site exists. The BadaDroid project—which aims to bring a fully functional version of Android to Samsung’s Wave series, devices that originally shipped with the relatively low profile Bada OS—and the driving force behind the project, XDA Elite Recognized Developer Rebellos, are first class examples of this.

The last time we brought you news of the BadaDroid project was to talk about a build that could be run from the SD card, allowing you to dual boot boot between Bada and Android. This was ideal as the Android builds available at the time were in a very alpha state and in no way usable as a daily driver. The latest piece of news on BadaDroid is a huge step towards making these builds much more useful.

One of the main challenges in a project such as this is producing a working RIL, otherwise the phone is never going to achieve even basic functionality. As I’m sure you can imagine, there isn’t exactly a ready-made RIL for BadaDroid devices kicking around out there on the Internet just waiting to be incorporated into this project. Therefore, the BadaDroid team’s only option was to effectively create one from scratch. That’s exactly what they’ve done, and there is now a certain amount of basic RIL functionality available, which Rebellos descibes as:

  • Real IMEI reading out of NVdata.
  • SIM card unlocking with PIN.
  • Registering to mobile network.
  • Incoming call notification, with answer/hangup option. NO AUDIO RECEIVING OR SENDING DURING CALL YET
  • Pending call support (hang-up option).
  • Receiving SMS.
  • Sending SMS.
  • Time from network updates (NITZ).

The builds remain in a very alpha state, but this is a huge step forward and a fantastic achievement for the team behind it. For more information on the development of these builds and details of exactly who is involved, check out the development thread.
