The Weekly Q&A: Week 29

The Weekly Q&A: Week 29

Xda-Developers is a great source of information. Part of the reason for this is the general attitude of the members here. Websters Dictonary defines community as “joint ownership or participation.” By working as a community, the members of XDA have been able to come up with answers to some of the most difficult questions posed in the mobile world. Part of my job as a XDA News Writer is to find those answers and provide them to you in a quick and easy to follow manner. Thus begins another addition of The Weekly Q&A. This week we will be focusing on HTC Visions: G2/DZ.

Q. Is there a volume limitation? If so, is there a tweak to increase the volume (of the speaker mostly, and also earphones)? [Original Thread]

A. Open Dspmanager then enable equalizer, increase each bitrate of the EQ slightly. Put the signal strength to moderate than play a song with a lot of bass to test. If its distorted, decrease the bit rate or turn signal strength to slightly. I combine dspmanager with power-amp for some insane eq. – (Thanks to melodicjunkie)

Q. I was looking for stock Rom from era.

I’ve found out that stock era is: 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
While on the forum there can be found: 12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2

The only difference is in radio, in the first one there is fU while in the second only f. Could somebody explain me what is a difference and if it is negligible? [Original Thread]

A. The “U” is added by you phone if you are on a carrier that offers HSUPA. That means you have both “4G dl AND 4G ul” if it was just “f” then you would only have 4G dl. (Thanks to TheNewGuy)

Q. Is there a way that I can use the original launcher instead of the ADW launcher on CM7 RC-2? [Original Thread]

A. You can find the mod here in the Nexus S forum: THREAD.

Download the first file and flash through recovery. You’ll lose all your homescreen placements and widgets you have set up with ADW.

If you want to flash this over nightlies every day, you need to follow a specific order to not lose your placements again.
1) flash CM7 nightly via recovery (not ROM manager)
2) after install, stay in recovery (don’t boot up into the ROM!), go to Advanced > Reboot recovery
3) after recovery reboots, flash the launcher mod (Thanks to martonikaj)

See [GUIDE] Install Stock 2.3 Launder over CM7 for more details.

Q. I made a backup image of my stock rom right before I installed CM. Is there any way that, if I backup my current configuration and reflash my backup of the stock rom, I could copy the package for swype over to the SD card to be reinstalled on CM? [Original Thread]

A. If you have a nandroid backup of a ROM with functioning Swype (which it sounds like you do), there’s an app around somewhere on here called SwypeRestore.apk that does it for you. (Thanks to chinly43 & funkeee)

Q. Why does NO ONE trust visionary to root? I’m always seeing posts about how people are getting stuck mid-root, but they’re using another root program. [Original Thread]

A. There were reports of the “Attempt permroot” function in the app failing, especially after applying the G2 OTA or if their phone came with it pre-installed (and it’s uncertain whether or not the app was updated to properly support the OTA). After it failed, the phone would be in an unknown state (sometimes stuck on the HTC screen, sometimes in a bootloop, sometimes unable to temproot anymore, etc.). A lot of the time, once the phone was in this state, other methods of rooting wouldn’t work as is. What made the problem worse was that if you had the OTA installed, you couldn’t use the shipping ROM to restore completely back to stock and start over without at least having temproot to downgrade your version number.

That’s why people tend to not trust Visionary anymore. Once reports came out of it being hit or miss, it became more prudent to recommend the other methods that were at least more easily recoverable from if something messed up. That being said, I don’t think there is a problem with it if you are only using the temproot function. I just wouldn’t recommend anyone hitting the permroot button anymore when safer methods exist. (Thanks to ianmcquinn)

That wraps up another edition of The Weekly Q&A. If there is something you feel may be “newsworthy” or you would like to share a solution that you came across, please PM me or another News Writer.
