Jailbreak Your Tizen-Powered Samsung Gear or Gear 2 Smartwatch

Last week, we talked about the first custom Tizen OS ROM for the original Samsung Galaxy Gear. Developed by XDA Recognized Developer Skin1980, this ROM built on the official XXUCNF1 ROM by adding root and a few features to make it more battery friendly and more aesthetically pleasing. Now, the developer has updated his work with a few new capabilities and support for the Samsung Gear 2.
Aptly named TizenMod 3, this release builds on its predecessor in several ways. The ROM is still based on the latest NF1 and NE5 firmwares available from Samsung, and they still brings root access and all of the previous goodies such as the Android L fonts and CPU frequency and governor modification support. However, the biggest highlight of this release is that it has been jailbroken. With TizenMod 3 installed, your Samsung Gear family smartwatch will no longer require a compatible Samsung phone in order to install an application.
Like pretty much all things Samsung, you’re going to want to have Odin ready at your disposal in order to install the ROM. Luckily, that is provided in case you don’t have it already, along with clear instructions on how to flash and a video demonstration.
If you own a Tizen-powered ROM and have been fiending for a bit more freedom, this may be right up your alley. Gear 2 owners looking to free their devices should head over to the TizenMod thread for the Gear 2. And if you’re rocking the original Gear, head over to TizenMod thread for the original Galaxy Gear.
