TUMBL: Just the Addiction Dr. Android Ordered

Mobile games are a varied lot. From amazing 3D multiplayer ventures like Critical Strike Portable to simple games like Snake, mobile gaming is as addictive as it is time consuming. Whether you’re young or old, there’s bound to be a game in the Play Store that suits your fancy. Today the newest game under the microscope, TUMBL, may prove to be your latest mobile addiction.
Interface and Initial Loading
The first thing I noticed when loading up TUMBL is the speed at which it loads. Granted I’m on a Galaxy Nexus, but all of the menu navigations are smooth and clean, with no delay or stuttering during transistions. Even the initial load after clicking on the icon in the app drawer was extremely quick by gaming standards. The bright colors are a welcome change from the dark, serious tone that many games use.
Once I hit the start button, a new menu opens up with four options for me to select: Play, Armory, Scores, and Help. Each selection has it’s own quarter of the screen, icon, and color. Being the gamer I am, I decided to jump right into “Play.”
After clicking play, the game asks me if I would like to view a tutorial. I agree to it’s request and am instantly transported to a set of instructions guiding me through details of the game. I notice that I can use both touch or tilt controls. Once it finishes, I tap the screen to start the game, and am instantly killed.
The game is fast. The concept is simple enough: navigate your character ball through openings in each level as the screen bears down upon you. There is no countdown to start; the game tosses you right in and expects you to adapt. As a fan of old school games, I really enjoy the fact that there is no mercy level or dumbed down version of the level to practice through. After playing through several times, and build up my coins I decide to head on over to the “Armory” menu from earlier in the game.
Once in the armory, I’m greated by a list of characters. Two of them I already own, and by clicking on the “Store” button at the bottom I realize that I can use the coins I’ve accrued to buy other characters that have different attributes and abilities. The abilities are varied and the characters are designed around different play styles.
I didn’t see any other options while I was in there, so I bought a character I liked and headed back to grind through another few rounds of play, so I could purchase some more characters that I liked later. Hopefully, as the game gets more developed the option to fully customize the existing characters will become present, because only being able to buy new characters is one of the few features I didn’t particularly care for.
In conclusion, the gameplay is fast and fun. The characters that exist are intriguing and the game itself seems well optimized for Android. I also enjoy the fact that by simply hitting the “Score” button I can see my top five runs in a platform picture, which is a fun take on the usual scores list seen in most games. All-in-all, I rate it a solid 8.5/10 with a higher score pending some much needed character customization. TUMBL is free and ad-free, which is definitely a plus in the current market. So head on over to the original thread and give this game a spin.
Oh, and for those wondering: the “Help” button mentioned earlier just takes you back through the tutorial.
