Unearth “Hidden” Web Addresses with URL Ripper

Short URLs are both a curse and a blessing. They save precious characters in space-limited social networks and make for more aesthetically pleasing link text, but sometimes you really don’t know what you’re going to get when you go to http://insertawesomecatvideo.com.

Thankfully, XDA Forum Member Perryb created an application to help decipher those shortened URLs so you won’t be caught off guard the next time someone tries to sneak in some surreptitious Rick Astley. The app also has a more conventional use-case when used with certain browsers that don’t properly support short URL redirection.

Using the app is quite simple. All you have to do is enter the URL’s unique hash into the app and select the URL shortening service, and the app does the rest. Unfortunately, URL Ripper does not currently use the Android intent system to handle inline links, and we would like to see this in future revisions to allow for even more streamlined usage.

Want to give this a shot? If so, be sure to visit the application thread.
