Earlier today, we announced the creation of a forum for the Intel Medfield-powered Motorola RAZR i. As exciting as a new device is, nothing beats the thrill experienced when development work begins. As an excellent first step, let’s get started and unlock the bootloader!
Motorola devs have always had it hard ever since Android came into existence. The company’s old policies virtually locked everyone out of being able to do anything at all with their devices. This was mainly due to impossibly hard to crack bootloaders, secretive documentation, and definitely no support from the carrier. People like XDA Forum Member mattlgroff have been fighting the good fight for quite some time by trying to make life easier for people who had these devices.
Times change, and so do stakes in companies it seems. Ever since the deal between Motorola and Google was finalized, we have seen a radical shift in mentality of the company’s management and approach to the openness of the platform. Because of that, and seemingly based on the same concept that HTC introduced last year with the HTC Dev-unlock program, Motorola will freely unlock your bootloader so that you can play with other ROMs, kernels, and all the good stuff that you are used to if you are an ORD stricken XDA regular. The procedure seems to be straight forward, but just in case, mattlgroff has created a guide in the development section of the forum, with videos and all, that will guide you step by step through the unlocking process.
Any and all downloads you may need (drivers for adb, etc) have been provided by the dev, so you can safely treat that thread as your one stop shop for any questions or explanations regarding the process. Please do keep in mind that unlocking the bootloader WILL void your warranty. Again, if you have been around XDA long enough, the term warranty is nothing but a word in a dictionary referring to something that we likely lost the moment we turned our devices on and started browsing the forums.
You can find more information in the original thread. Happy unlocking!
